Bacteroids Thetaiotaomicron
Predominant intestinal bacteria that produces enzymes that break down the plant material that we ingest.
i.e. oat fibres
Eukaryotic Cells
Cells with a nucleus that contains most of the genetic material
e.g neurons, muscle cells, skin cells.
Microbiome
this describes the population of microbiotic organisms within the human body.
such communities or microroganisms is general are not visible to the human eye.
Prokaryotic Cells
cells that do not contain a nucleus
e.g bacterial cells - no membrane-bound DNA
- Human body contains more prokaryotic cells than eukaryotic cells (10 times more!)
- Prok. cells make up 2-3% body mass
- Mostly harmless: carry out essential functions in physiological systems
- If harmful: managed by immune system
Staphylococcus Haemolyticus
Harmless when resideing on the skin, which is what it ussually does.
Harmful if it enters the human body -> becomes pathogen -> causes immune system to become active
Streptococcus Salivarius
one of the first microbes to colonize a newborn's oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract.
inhabitant of the upper respiratory tract and oral cavity.
contributes to formation of dental plaque.
