Hemoglobin A
The normal adult hemoglobin inherited in simple Mendelian fashion, composed of two alpha and two beta chains.
2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG)
A molecule that binds to deoxyhemoglobin, decreasing its affinity for oxygen.
Carbonic Anhydrase
An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid within erythrocytes.
Sideroblastic anemia
A disorder caused by impaired hemoglobin synthesis leading to iron accumulation within erythrocytes.
Porphyrias
Disorders characterized by abnormalities in porphyrin synthesis, leading to various clinical manifestations.
Methemoglobin
Hemoglobin that has iron in the ferric state, resulting in poor oxygen delivery and cyanosis.
Glycosylated Hemoglobin (Hemoglobin A1)
A subfraction of normal hemoglobin A that includes A1a, A1b, and A1c, formed during RBC maturation.
Thalassemia
A group of inherited blood disorders resulting from reduced production of globin chains in hemoglobin.
Embryonic hemoglobins
Primitive hemoglobins formed by immature erythrocytes in the yolk sac, including Gower types.
Haptoglobin
A plasma protein that binds free hemoglobin to prevent its loss through the kidneys during hemolysis.
