Divisions of CNS
Brain and Spinal Cord
Parts of the PNS
Cranial Nerves (12 pairs). Spinal Nerves (31 pairs). Autonomic nnd Somatic.
Efferent Nerves
Motor, move away from the brain
Afferent Nerves
Sensory, moves toward the brain
Autonomic Nervous System
Apart of PNS but regulates the bodys involuntary functions. Carrys impulses from CNS to Organs
Sympathetic
Fight or Flight
Parasympathetic
Rest and Digest
Glia
nerve cells that do NOT carry impulses (support cells)
Three types of Nerouns
Sensory- carry impulses to spine and brain from body
Motor- carry impulses from the brain to muscles
Interneuron- the exchange of impulses from sensory to motor
Dendrites
Many branching projections that carry nerve impulses towards the body
Cell Body
Contains the nucleus
Axons
One long projection that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body
Schwann Cell
Glia cell that does not conduct impulses and forms the Myelin Sheath
Astrocytes
Star shaped cells that anchor small blood vessels to nerouns
Microglia
Small, move in inflamed brain tissue to carry out phagocytosis
Oligodendrocytes
form of myelin sheaths on CNS axons.
