Additive System

Subtractive System

Used with materials like ink and dye; decreases energy resulting in duller colors, with CMYK as primary colors.

Integrative System

Combines primary colors from both additive and subtractive systems, allowing for over 5,000 mixable colors.

Chromatic Shadow

The principle that shadows are the opposite of the light source, or the complement.

Masstone

The color as it appears directly from the tube without any dilution.

Simultaneous Contrast

A term coined by Chevreul to describe how colors appear differently based on surrounding colors.

Value

The lightness or darkness of a color, considered the most important dimension in the Munsell color system.

Chroma

The intensity or purity of a color in the Munsell color system.

Hue

The color family or type; associated with emotional qualities.

Neutralization

The process of reducing a color's intensity by adding its complement or gray.
