Muscle Tissue
40-50% of all body mass
Causes all body movement
Vascular: filled with blood vessels
Three types of muscle tissue: skeletal, cardiac, smooth
Muscle Contraction
Movement happens when muscles contract and relax
Contraction happens when electricity is present
Actin and Myosin help muscles to contract
Muscle Relaxation
Movement happens when muscles contract and relax
Relaxation happens when electricity is absent
Muscle Cell
Also called muscle fibers
long, skinny cells
Structure of muscle: muscle > fascicle > muscle fibers
Actin
Thin filaments
Myosin
Thick filaments
Skeletal Muscle
Location: Attached to bones and sometimes in the skin (ex. face)
Appearance: Multineucleated; peripherally located nuclei; has striations
Functions: Voluntary control; movement, maintaining posture, production of heat
Cardiac Muscle
Location: Found in heart
Appearance: Centrally located nucleus, has striations, highly branched and interconnected
Function: Mostly involuntary control; pumps blood through arteries and veins
Smooth Muscle
Location: found in many organs, ex. stomach, intestines, blood vessels, bladder, eye, reproductive organs
Appearance: Centrally located nucleus, no striations
Function: involuntary control, contracts slowly (peristalsis); push and digest food, contractions to prepare for childbirth
