4 Main Components
Heart, Blood, Blood vessels, lungs
Heart
pear-shaped muscular organ responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels by rhythmic contraction
Heart contracts
approx. 65X/minute
Pulmonary circulation
pumps blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs
Systemic circulation
oxygenated blood is pumped from the left side of the heart to the rest of the body
Superior and inferior vena cava
- large veins that bring oxygen-poor blood into the heart
Right atrium
- upper right chamber of the heart
Tricuspid valve
- prevents blood from flowing back into the right atrium after it has entered the right ventricle
Right ventricle
- lower right chamber of the heart
Pulmonary valve
- prevents blood from flowing back into the right ventricle after it has entered the pulmonary artery
*Pulmonary artery
brings oxygen-poor blood to the lungs
*Pulmonary vein -
brings oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium
Left atrium
upper left chamber of the heart
Bicuspid (mitral) valve
prevents blood from flowing back into the left atrium after it has entered the left ventricle
Left ventricle
lower left chamber of the heart
Aortic valve
prevents blood from flowing back into the left ventricle after it has entered the aorta
