What are the three steps involved in triggering and then propagating an action potential
Generaton of an end plate potential, folowed by an action potential depolarization, then repolarization
What is the first step in generating an action potential across the sarcolema
An end plate potential is generated at the neuromuscular junction. This creates a wave of depolarization that spreads
What is the second step in generating an action potential across the sarcolema
Depolarization: generating and propagating an action potential. Opens voltage-gated channels, allowing Na+ to enter. This continues across the sarcolema
What is the third step in generating an action potential across the sarcolema
Repolarization: restoring the sarcolema to its initial polarized state (negative inside, positive outside). The voltage gated Na+ channels close, and voltage-gated K+ channels open.
What is the refractory period
During repolarization when the cell cannot be stimulated until repolarization is complete.
What does repolarization restore
the resting electrical conditions of the neuron
What restores the ionic conditions of the cells
The atp-dependent sodium potassium pump
Is the action potential stoppable
No. it is also an all-or-none response
