1/7
Vocabulary flashcards covering the external and internal structures of a leaf and their specific functions.
Midrib
Keeps the leaf in an upright position.
Petiole
Connects the leaf blade to the stem and acts as a transport medium for water and mineral ions to the leaf.
Leaf blade
Provides a large surface area for light absorption.
Cuticle
Reduces water evaporation from the leaf.
Upper epidermis
Allows light and water to pass through.
Palisade cells
The layer where most photosynthesis takes place because it contains a large amount of chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts
Organelles that absorb the light energy needed for photosynthesis.
Spongy mesophyll cells
Cells with large air spaces for air circulation that allow carbon dioxide and oxygen gas to diffuse in and out of the leaf.
