Vocabulary flashcards covering relations, functions, linear forms, transformations, and absolute value graphs from Chapter 2.
Relation
A set of ordered pairs.
Domain
The set of x-coordinates of a relation.
Range
The set of y-coordinates of a relation.
Function
A relation where each element of the domain is paired with exactly one element of the range.
Slope-Intercept Form
A linear equation written in the form y=mx+b.
Point-Slope Form
A linear equation written in the form y−y1=m(x−x1).
Direct Variation
A linear equation of the form y=kx, where k=0.
Constant of Variation
The non-zero constant k in a direct variation equation (y=kx), equivalent to xy=k.
Vertical Translation
A transformation of a function represented by the form f(x)+k.
Horizontal Translation
A transformation of a function represented by the form f(x−h).
Stretch or Compression
A transformation of a function represented by the form af(x).
Reflection in the x-axis
A transformation of a function represented by −f(x).
Reflection in the y-axis
A transformation of a function represented by f(−x).
Parent Absolute Value Function
The base absolute value function given by the equation y=∣x∣.
Vertex (Absolute Value Function)
The point (h,k) in the general absolute value function form y=a∣x−h∣+k.
Trend Line
A line or line of best fit whose equation is used to model data that cluster in a linear pattern.
