Nasal mucosa

The lining of the nasal cavity that can become irritated and affect the sense of smell and taste.

Paranasal sinuses

Air-filled cavities in the bones surrounding the nasal cavity that communicate with it and assist with sound production.

Sinusitis

Inflammation of the mucous membranes in the sinuses.

Rhinitis

Inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity, often causing congestion.

Epistaxis

The clinical term for nosebleeds, which are common under low humidity conditions.

Tonsilitis

Inflammation of the tonsils, which can cause airway obstruction and discomfort.

Eustachian tubes

Tubes that connect the middle ear to the nasopharynx, helping to equalize pressure.

Pharyngeal reflex

A protective reflex that causes gagging or coughing in response to stimuli in the pharynx.

Vellecula

The space between the base of the tongue and the epiglottis, important during intubation.

Papillae

Taste buds on the tongue that detect different flavors such as sweet and sour.
