Conjunction
Words that connect words, phrases, or clauses (parts of sentences) together and create relationships between elements in a sentence.
Four Types of Conjunctions
The four types into which conjunctions are segregated: Coordinating Conjunction, Subordinating Conjunction, Correlative Conjunction, and Conjunctive Adverbs.
Coordinating Conjunction
Conjunctions that connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal grammatical rank.
FANBOYS
An acronym for the most common coordinating conjunctions: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
Subordinating Conjunction
Conjunctions that connect a dependent clause (a clause that cannot stand alone) to an independent clause (a clause that can stand alone).
Dependent Clause
A clause that cannot stand alone.
Independent Clause
A clause that can stand alone.
For (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to show reason.
And (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to add information.
Nor (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to add negative info.
But (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to show contrast.
Or (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to give a choice.
Yet (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to show contrast/concession.
So (Coordinating Conjunction)
A coordinating conjunction whose purpose is to show result.
