XII. Hypoglossal
I. Olfactory nerve
Sensory
Passes through cribiform plate
Carry afferent impulses for sense of smell
II. Optic nerve
sensory
runs through optic canal, then crosses over at optic chiasm, then runs to occipital cortex
carry afferent impulses for vision
III. Oculomotor nerve
motor nerve
superior orbital fissue
innervates 4 of the 6 extrinsic eye muscles AND parasympathic motor fibers allow pupils to contrict
IV. Trochlear Nerve
motor
superior orbital fissure
innervates superior oblique muscle
V1. Ophthamic division of Trigeminal nerve
sensory
superior orbital fissure
sensation of forehead
V2. Maxillary division of trigeminal nerve
Sensory
foramen rotundum
sensation of middle face
V3. Mandibular division of trigeminal nerve
motor and sensory
foramen ovale
sensation of bottom of face and anterior tongue; innervates muscles of mastication
VI. Abducens Nerve
Motor
superior orbital fissure
innervates lateral rectus muscle
VII. Facial nerve
both
internal acoustic meatus
innervates muscles of facial expressions and taste for 2/3 of the tongue
Branches of facial nerve
Temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular, cervical
(to zanzibar by motor car)
VIII. Vestibulocochlear nerve
sensory
internal acoustic meatus
impulses for hearing and equilibrium
IX. Glossopharyngeal nerve
both
jugular foramen
sensory for posterior 1/3 of tongue and parasympathetic motor nerves for salivary glands. Also motor nerve for sytlopharyneus
X. vagus nerve
both
jugular foramen
parasympathetic motor nerves for 2/3 of GI (increases digestion) and sensory of tongue
XI. Accessory Nerve
motor
jugular foramen
innervates sternocleidomastoid and trapezius
XII. Hypoglossal Nerve
motor
hypoglossal canal
innervates muscles of the tongue
