first paragraph
When Montag first meets Clarisse, she opens up his mind and leads him to start becoming conscious of the world around him. This marks the beginning of Montag’s change as he becomes more conscious and starts to realize that the world around him is messed up.
second paragraph
Further in the story, Captain Beatty comes to Montag’s house, where Montag and Mildred are hiding with piles of books. Mildred becomes increasingly nervous about what Beatty will do to them. Montag starts to fully reject his profession as a fireman by hoarding and reading books, while not thinking through the consequences he faces if he gets caught
third paragraph
Our theme statement for Montag and his conscience is: “When people start to question the ideas and beliefs imposed on them by society, their true ideas and conscience emerge from beneath the layers of false beliefs that have shaped their identity and character.”
fourth paragraph
We included this drawing of a tree growing as a way to illustrate how Montag grows as a person throughout the story.
