What is a basic physical quantity?
A quantity measured independently, such as length or mass.
What is a derived physical quantity?
A quantity calculated from other quantities, such as force or density.
What are the seven SI base units?
Metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole and candela.
What does kilo mean?
1000 (10³).
What does centi mean?
0.01 (10⁻²).
What does milli mean?
0.001 (10⁻³).
What is the SI unit of force?
The newton (N).
What is Newton's second law?
Force equals mass multiplied by acceleration (F = ma).
What is the equation for acceleration?
a = (v − u) / t.
What is the equation for force?
F = ma.
What is the difference between distance and displacement?
Distance is total path travelled; displacement is change in position with direction.
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms.
What is weight?
The force of gravity acting on an object, measured in newtons.
What is the equation for weight?
W = mg.
What is gravity on Earth?
Approximately 9.81 m/s².
What is Newton's third law?
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
What is density?
Mass per unit volume.
What is the equation for density?
Density = mass / volume (ρ = m/V).
What is the SI unit of density?
kg/m³.
How do you find an irregular object's volume?
Subtract initial water volume from final water volume.
What is Archimedes' principle?
Upthrust equals the weight of fluid displaced.
What is upthrust?
The upward force exerted by a fluid on an object.
What does a hydrometer measure?
The relative density of a liquid.
What is specific gravity?
Substance density divided by reference density, usually water.
What is particle density?
Mass divided by the volume of the particles themselves.
What is bulk density?
Mass divided by total volume, including spaces between particles.
What is pressure?
Force per unit area.
What is the equation for pressure?
p = F/A.
What is the SI unit of pressure?
The pascal (Pa), equal to one newton per square metre.
Why does a sharp knife cut more easily?
Its smaller contact area produces greater pressure.
What happens to pressure if area decreases and force stays constant?
Pressure increases.
What is hydrostatic pressure?
Pressure exerted by a fluid due to its depth.
What is the equation for hydrostatic pressure?
p = ρgh.
What three factors affect hydrostatic pressure?
Fluid density, gravitational acceleration and depth.
How does liquid pressure change with depth?
It increases as depth increases.
Why is mercury used in a barometer?
It is very dense, so a shorter liquid column is needed.
What does a barometer measure?
Atmospheric pressure.
What is standard atmospheric pressure in mmHg?
Approximately 760 mmHg.
What is blood pressure measured in?
Millimetres of mercury (mmHg).
What is systolic blood pressure?
Pressure when the heart contracts.
What is diastolic blood pressure?
Pressure when the heart relaxes between beats.
How do pumps move fluids?
They create pressure differences that move fluid.
What is the difference between force and pressure?
Force is a push or pull; pressure is force divided by area.
What is the equation for acceleration due to a change in velocity?
a = (final velocity − initial velocity) / time.
What is the formula for the volume of a cuboid?
V = length × width × height.
What is the formula for the volume of a cylinder?
V = πr²h.
What is the formula for the volume of a sphere?
V = (4/3)πr³.
What is the relationship between pressure and area?
For the same force, pressure is inversely proportional to area.
What causes an object to float in a fluid?
Upthrust balances its weight.
What is the unit of acceleration?
Metres per second squared (m/s²).
