bone
-Dense, hard connective tissue composing the skeleton, -dark circle in the center is the central canal
-dark circles surrounding are osteocytes sitting in cavities called lacunae

Cartilage
-3 types
-hyaline, fibrocartilage, and elastic cartilage

hyaline cartilage
-found on trachea, ribs, and breast bone
-covers bone ends at joints
-blue-white appearance
-its cells are called chondrocytes

Fibrocartilage
-cartilage that contains fibrous bundles of collagen, such as that of the
-found in the intervertebral disks in the spinal cord.

elastic cartilage
-external ear

dense connective tissue (dense fibrous tissue)
-main matrix element is collagen fiber
-creates tendons and ligaments
-located in the dermis—lower layers of the skin

areolar connective tissue
-function: holds internal organs together
-location: widely distributed under epithelia of body and all mucus membranes
- dark lines are collagen fibers

adipose tissue
-tissue that stores fat, insulates the body
-forms subcutaneous tissue beneath the skin
-macromolecule: lipids

reticular connective tissue
-forms stroma of organs
-supports white blood cells, also known as lymphocytes (the dark purple dots)

skeletal muscle tissue
-function: Voluntary movement
-location: In skeletal muscles attached to bones or occasionally to skin.

cardiac muscle
-location: heart wall
-function: allows the heart to pump blood
-contains junctions known as intercalated disks

smooth muscle
-no striations visible
-location: walls of stomach, uterus, and blood vessels
-function: contracts to mix or propel substances through the organ along a specific pathway

nervous tissue
-function: carries electrical messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of the body (irritability and conductivity)
-location: brain and spinal cord
-contains a special group of supporting cells known as neuroglia (dots surrounding large dark areas)

collagen
Fibrous protein that gives the skin form and strength

blood
-transports of respiratory gases, nutrients, wastes, and other substances through the circulatory system
-contains blood cells
