THE TAAAAAAAALLLLLLEEEEEEE OF LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD!
MASON: 67!
(Raise hand) Missus Wilson! They said it again!
MICHELLE: It’s okay. Now, why don’t we take the closing number from the top?
Missus Wilson, where do I go?
MICHELLE: Right there.
Missus Wilson, you’re silly. That’s where Mister Barkerson stands. (Hug Mr. Barkerson)
MICHELLE: Right. Why don’t I take Mr. Barkerson…
NO!
MICHELLE: So he can watch you dance?
But- But-
MICHELLE: He can sit right here with me.
(hesitating) You’ll- you’ll take good care of him?
MICHELLE: The best.
(hesitates, then nods) Okay.
(hugs Mr. Barkerson)
Mommy will be right back, okay?
(hands Barkerson to Michelle and brushes her hand… then pulls hand away)
STOP!!
MICHELLE: What?
(Starts sobbing uncontrollably)
MICHELLE: Scout, what’s wrong?
You touched my hand.
MICHELLE: Oh, I’m sorry, honey. It was an accident.
It’s too late!
MICHELLE: Too late for what?
My- my- ice powers. Missus Wilson is gunna turn to ice!
MICHELLE: Ice powers?
I touch something and it turns to ice. I’m so, sorry, Missus Wilson. I’m so sorry! (goes to hug michelle, then hesitates. Instead, drop to the floor in the most dramatic way possible)
MICHELLE: Scout?
(sniffles) Yeah?
MICHELLE: I’m not ice.
You- you aren’t?
MICHELLE: I think you didn’t- uh- touch me hard enough.
Really?
MICHELLE: I think- I think we’re gonna be okay. Do you think we can move on?
(Sits up, considers this, then sniffles) Yeah. I think we can. You sure you’re not ice?
MICHELLE: Pretty sure, yup.
(Big sigh of relief) That’s good. Not a lot of people are safe from my powers.
MICHELLE: Everyone!
HE WAS MEAN!
BUT SHE’S THE QUEEN!
AND NOW WE ALL SINGGGGG
THE TALE OF LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
THE TALE OF THE BRAVE LITTLE GIRL WHO COULD
SHE WON THE BATTLES AND THE WARS
AGAINST A WOLF! HIS EVIL’S NO MORE!
KAYDENCE: Oh, Scout can be evil! Right Scout?
Huh?
JAMES: Now, while it’s great, we still have a long way to go. So, why don’t we-
(Raises hand) Mister Clarke! Mister Clarke!!
JAMES: Yes, Scout?
Whens the field trip?
CARTER: FIELD TRIP???
Yeah, duh! Missus Wilson gave my mommy a permission slip. That means a field trip. Like when my class went to the museum.
KAYDENCE: O M G! We didn’t do a field trip last year. This is so awesome!
FIELD TRIP! FIELD TRIP! FIELD TRIP!
HAYLEIGH: Yeah, well, last year Miss Smith took my class to the movie theatre.
No way.
HAYLEIGH: Yup. My daddy sent me with popcorn and candy money too. I got Skittles.
Aweeee no fair! I love Skittles.
CARTER: Stupid.
(start sobbing)
JAMES: What’s going on guys?
HAYLEIGH IS BEING MEAN TO ME.
HAYLEIGH: Oh my gosh I literally just told her that she was doing the dance wrong.
I WAS NOT!
HAYLEIGH: I told her that she did the jazz square wrong. That’s it.
Nuh-uh! She told me my mommy would have been dissuhpunted if I did it like that.
JAMES: Hayleigh, that was not nice.
(sniffling, crying quieting) Yeah.
HAYLEIGH: I wasn’t lying! Her mom would’ve been mad at her if she did it like that. All that work and time…for nothing.
(lets out a huge sob) WHERE IS MR. BARKERSON. I NEED MR. BARKERSON!!!!!! (fall after Michelle gives)
JAMES: Alright, Scout, why don’t you go to the cool down corner with me?
But- But- Mason’s there.
JAMES: Alright, lets go Scout.
(sniffling) Okay. (get up, done crying. go to grab James hand but gasp and pull away again)
JAMES: Oh, Scout - Mr. Clarke is safe from your ice powers too.
He is?
MICHELLE: Yup. He’s one of the good ones.
(Scout hesitates but eventually grab James hand) Hayleigh is mean.
JAMES: No, she’s not. Hayleigh just cares a lot, and sometimes doesn’t know how to show it. Your mommy would be very proud of you, Scout. I know I am.
(Smiles) Thanks, Mister Clarke. (step back) Boy, am I glad I can’t hurt you with my ice powers.
(HUGE BOOM)
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
MICHELLE: Alright. Follow my lead. Zip. Zap. Zop.
Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop.
MICHELLE: Good! Now, we’re going to do that again, but adding this motion when we say each word.
Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop. Zip. Zap. Zop.
CARTER: Zip!
(freeze, then slowly start sobbing. After Michelle changes topic completely stop crying + walk absolutely normally)
MASON: I’ve never had any pets. My mom’s allergic.
My- My- (starts to cry) My mommy’s mommy died.
MICHELLE: Oh my-
I never got to meet her. And- and- and- when my mommy talks about her…she gets so so sad. So I get sad. And now I’m sad. (stop crying when michelle responds)
MASON: They’re stupid. Grandparents are stupid.
Also, my fish died. His name was Bubbles. (Start crying again) He was so. Awesome.
MICHELLE: Why don’t we take a quick break?
(Spots mason, goes to him) You don’t talk to your grandmommy and granddaddy?
MASON: Uh, no. I don’t care anyway. Parents are weird so grandparents can’t be all that great.
Nuh-uh. My mommy is nice. My daddy is too.
MASON: Well, good for you then. I’m sorry about your grandma, though. And your fish. Bubbles.
Thanks.
MASON: Does your stuffed animal make you feel better?
Mr. Barkerson?
MASON: Yeah, Mr. Barkerson.
Oh, he helps the mostest. He’s, like, the best. My daddy gave him to me.
MASON: That’s nice. My dad doesn’t really give me presents. He gives Kayla some though.
Is Kayla your sissy?
MASON: She’s my dad’s girlfriend.
(giggling) That’s silly. Your mommy’s not your daddy’s girlfriend?
MASON: My mom and dad hate each other.
Oh.
MASON: It’s okay though. I get two Christmasses.
Lucky. I wish I got two Christmasses.
MASON: It’s okay I guess. (eats apples) Do you have extra?
Yeah. But I don’t think I can share. You know, with my… (leans in, whispers) ICE POWERS.
