What happens if the concentration of a reactant is increased?
The equilibrium shifts in the direction that uses up the added reactant, so more products are formed until equilibrium is reached again.
What happens if the concentration of a product is increased?
The equilibrium shifts towards the reactants, using up some of the added product.
What happens if a product is removed?
The equilibrium shifts towards the products, replacing some of the removed product.
What happens when temperature increases?
The equilibrium shifts in the endothermic direction to counteract the increase in temperature.
What happens when temperature decreases?
The equilibrium shifts in the exothermic direction to counteract the decrease in temperature.
What happens when pressure increases?
Equilibrium shifts towards the side with the smaller number of gas molecules.
What happens when pressure decreases?
Equilibrium shifts towards the side with the larger number of gas molecules.
Does a catalyst change the position of equilibrium? No.
What does a catalyst do to a reversible reaction?
It increases the rates of both the forward and reverse reactions, so equilibrium is reached faster, but the equilibrium position does not change.
