What is the history of Tottenham in the 1980s?
1980s, was the scene of riots concentrated on broadwater farm, a large post war housing estate
How has Tottenham been regenerated? (Mayor, Industry, homes)
Mayor of London invested £28 million into Tottenham
Rebuilding of Peacock Industrial Estate, created 5000 new jobs
^although this required the temporary closure of small businesses such as furniture, clothing and chemical companies, in order to rebuild the estate
Haringey council has engaged Arup, a housing and design consultancy to build 2 housing zones with 10,000 new homes around Tottenham
Why has some of Tottenham’s regeneration been controversial?
The rebuilding of Peacock industrial estate had to cause the temporary closure of small local businesses like furniture shops, harming the shop owners, employees and the local economy.
Rebuilding of Olympic stadium in West Ham, requirement to include affordable housing,
some worry this will remove some of the profit necessary for further regeneration and will cause a loss of diversity in churches created by the African Carribean community
Fears of gentrification, a network called “our Tottenham” has been set up and supported by companies like N17 to help voice opposition to regeneration plans.
