Character foil

a literary device designed to illustrate or reveal information, traits, values, or motivations of one character through the comparison and contrast of another character. A character foil serves the purpose of drawing attention to the qualities of another character, frequently the protagonist. This is effective as a means of developing a deeper understanding of a character by emphasising their strengths and weaknesses.

Why does Banquo’s ghost appear and not Duncan?

Macbeth feels more guilty about Banquo’s murder because he was closer to him and his murder was more of a breach of trust.

Duncan’s murder was done by persuasion whereas Banquo’s was fully Macbeth’s idea.

What is significant about where Banquo’s ghost sits?

He sits in Macbeths seat at the table showing that his bloodline will one day become King and is a threat to Macbeth’s power. As well as this, it could also show that Banquo was a better person and more fitting for the throne than Macbeth.

what does Hecate do?

She chastises the Witches because they have not included her in their dealings with Macbeth. She tells them that they must prepare especially potent spells to delude Macbeth when he consults them.
