Vocabulary terms and definitions covering Earth's global system and the four interconnected spheres: biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere.
System
In science, a set of interacting independent parts within a defined boundary.
Global system
A set of parts working together in a contained space, such as planet Earth.
Biosphere
All living things on Earth, where organisms are consumed to transfer energy and nutrients and dead organic matter is recycled.
Lithosphere

Hydrosphere
All water on Earth, where water changes from solid to liquid to gas as it moves through an environment.
Atmosphere
All gas on Earth, where air circulates around the Earth, creating changes in temperature and weather.
The rock cycle
The cycle in the lithosphere where rocks are broken down to form new types of rocks over time.
The water cycle
The cycle in the hydrosphere where water changes from solid, to liquid and to gas as it moves through an environment.
