soma (cell body)
The central part of a neuron that contains the nucleus and is responsible for maintaining the cell's health and functioning.
dendrites
recieves signals
axon
transmits signals away from the cell body
axon terminal
The ending part of an axon that releases neurotransmitters to communicate with other neurons or target cells.
nucleus
The membrane-bound organelle in a cell that contains genetic material and controls cellular activities.
nodes
allow nerve impulses jump from gap to gap
myelin sheath
speeds up transmission of electrical signals
astrocytes
star-shaped cells, provides support to neurons, helps form blood barrier and help move nutrients and control ion balance
olidendrocytes
wrap around the neurons in CNS and help create myelin sheath
microglia
brains clean up crew, scans for damaged cells/ clean up debris in brain
ependymal cells
line the brain’s ventricles and help produce and circulate cerebrospinal fluid which cushions brain and spinal cord
satellite cells
surround and support the neuron cell bodies in the PNS helping them get nutrients and maintain a healthy environment.
schwann cells
wraps around neurons in the PNS to create myelin sheath
