lymphatic system
returns excess tissue fluid back to the blood
lymph transport back to blood
interstitial fluid → lymphatic capillaries → lymphatic vessels → lymph nodes → lymphatic ducts → veins at root of neck → blood stream
lymphatic system movement
skeletal muscle contraction compressing lymphatic vessels, respiratory movements create pressure changes, smooth muscle contraction in large lymphatic veessels and one-way valves prevent backflow
excess fluid that remains in tissues
contains excess interstitial fluid, leaked plasma proteins, cellular debris and pathogens where lymphatic system collects it
lymph nodes
filter lymph, contain lymphocytes to recognise and respond to pathogens and macrophages to remove debris and pathogens
lymphatic vessels roles
fluid balance, immune transport and fat absorption
