Flashcards covering core terminology and basic concepts of chemistry from the Grade 11 Agricultural Science curriculum.
Matter
Anything that takes up or occupies space, having both volume and mass.
Atom
The smallest particle of matter that cannot be broken down further by chemical processes, but can be split with a nuclear reaction.
Molecule
A group of two or more atoms joined together to form a compound that acts differently from the original atoms.
Element
An atom of a specific substance defined by the number of protons it possesses, which cannot be broken down by chemical processes.
Compound
A substance formed by the combination of two or more different chemical elements.
Periodic table
A table of all the known chemical elements arranged according to their atomic numbers.
Isotopes
Two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in the nucleus of their atoms.
Neutrons
Subatomic particles that have mass but are not charged negatively or positively.
Protons
Subatomic particles that are positively charged.
Electrons
Subatomic particles that are negatively charged.
