Laboratory Procedures
Should be read thoroughly before beginning and followed carefully.
Safety Equipment
Must be worn from the start of the procedure until the lab is completed and cleaned.
Approved Procedures
Follow all procedures carefully, using prescribed amounts of materials.
Teacher Presence
No labs may be performed without a teacher present and instruction to start.
Proper Attire
Mandatory requirements include pulling back long hair, wearing closed-toe shoes, and avoiding dangling jewelry.
Food and Beverages
NEVER allowed in the classroom.
Mouth Safety
Never put anything in your mouth unless instructed by the teacher.
Label Reading
Read all labels carefully and replace caps or stoppers immediately.
Lab Area Maintenance
Should always be dry, clean, and uncluttered.
Safety Equipment Location
Know the location of all safety equipment and exits in the room.
Reporting Incidents
Report spills, accidents, and injuries immediately to the teacher.
Glass Disposal
Place broken glass in the proper receptacle and paper refuse in the garbage can.
Heat Source Safety
Never leave a heat source unattended or place objects near it unless instructed.
Stoppered Containers
Never heat a stoppered container.
Test Tube Safety
Heated test tubes should always be pointed away from people.
Acid and Water
Always add acid to water, never water to acid.
Smelling Containers
Never smell containers directly; use the wafting method.
Reporting Cleanliness
Report unclean areas or broken equipment to the teacher immediately.
Electrical Safety
Never handle electric equipment with wet hands or use it if wet.
Heated Glass Safety
Never pick up heated glass without proper safety equipment.
Leaving the Classroom
Clean up your lab station, return materials, and wash hands with soap and water.
Listening to Directions
Always listen to all directions given.
Equipment Handling
Treat all laboratory equipment as if it is incredibly expensive.
Horseplay
Horseplaying or fooling around is never appropriate or acceptable.
