Ring of Fire🔥

ROF = area of pacific ocean that is shaped like horse shoe

  • home to 90% of world earthquake + 75% world volcano

Case study 1: Iceland

Iceland lies on Mid Atlantic Ridge, a divergent plate boundary

  • As plates pull apart, magma rise up + erupts as lava, creating new ocean crust.

  • island = covered w more than 100 volcanoes. Some are extinct, but over 30 are still active

Case study 2: Japan

  • Japan lie on edge of 4 tectonic plates – Eurasian, Pacific, Philippine + North American Plate

  • Mt Fuji = located near convergent boundary

  • The PhP = subducting beneath the PacP in region, causing subducted crust to melt, forming magma. Magma then rises thru Earth's crust + eventually lead to volcanic eruptions

  • (note, PhP = Phillipine Plate + pacP = Pacific Plate)

Case study 3: Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands = formed by volcanic hot spot - an upwelling(magma rising) of magma, that creates new islands as the Pacific Plate moves over it
