Flashcards covering the step-by-step instructions for solving linear systems by elimination.
Standard/Aligned Form
The form of a linear equation written as Ax+By=C.
Step 1 in Solving Systems by Elimination
Write both equations in Standard/Aligned Form (Ax+By=C).
Step 2 in Solving Systems by Elimination
Multiply one or both equations by numbers so that the coefficients of one variable (x or y) are either identical or exact opposites.
Step 3 in Solving Systems by Elimination
Add the equations together if coefficients are opposites, or subtract them if coefficients are identical, to eliminate that variable.
Step 4 in Solving Systems by Elimination
Solve for the remaining variable.
Step 5 in Solving Systems by Elimination
Substitute the found value back into either original equation to solve for the other variable.
Step 6 in Solving Systems by Elimination
State your point of intersection (x,y).
Point of Intersection
The final solution (x,y) resulting from solving a system of linear equations.
