Vocabulary terms covering photosynthesis, leaf starch testing procedures, and food web ecology from the Energy and Living Things revision worksheet.
Photosynthesis
The biological process in which plants use carbon dioxide, water, chlorophyll, and light energy from the sun to produce glucose and oxygen.
Chloroplast
The organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis takes place.
Boiling water (leaf starch test)
The initial step of immersing a leaf in boiling water for one minute in order to kill the cells.
Boiling alcohol (leaf starch test)
The step in which leaves are boiled in alcohol for several minutes to extract chlorophyll and remove the green colour.
Iodine solution
A chemical indicator added to a leaf that changes from brown to blue/black if starch is present.
Producer
An organism, such as a plant (e.g., heather or grass), that produces its own food at the base of a food web.
Primary consumer
An organism that feeds directly on producers in a food web, such as sheep, rabbits, or insects.
Secondary consumer
An organism that feeds on primary consumers in a food web, such as eagles or grouse.
Arrows (food chain / food web)
Symbols in a food chain or food web that indicate the direction of energy transfer, showing what eats what.
