New cards

what is a sports injury (Bahr 2020)

injury in tissue or other derangement of normal physical function due to participation in sports, resulting from rapid or repetitive transfer of kinetic energy

2
New cards

types of injuries

physical complaint

medical attention

time-loss

3
New cards

physical complaint

any physical complaint sustained by a player that results from sports participation, irrespective of the need for medical attention or time-loss sport-related activities

4
New cards

medical attention

injury results in a player receiving medical attention

5
New cards

time-loss

an injury that results in a player being unable to undertake a full part in a future sport-related activity

6
New cards

injuries and player availability (Haegglund 2013)

Injuries had a significant influence on performance in the league play and in European cups in male professional football. The findings stress the importance of injury prevention to increase a team’s chances of success.

7
New cards

haegglund exp AIM

To evaluate the association between injury rates and team performance (domestic league and European club competitions) in elite-level men’s European football.

8
New cards

haegglund METHODS

Twenty-four elite-level men’s football teams from nine European countries were followed prospectively for 11 seasons (2001–2012); equating to 155 team-seasons of data.

Data collected from each team included, individual (i.e., player) training and match exposure and injuries that resulted in time-loss from football-related activities.

Statistical analyses were performed to investigate the effect of injury rates on team performance

9
New cards

haegglund exp RESULTS

Lower injury burden and higher (player) match availability were associated with higher final league ranking.

Similarly, lower injury incidence, lower injury burden and higher (player) match availability were associated with increased points per league match.

Finally, lower injury burden and higher (player) match availability were associated with an increase in the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) Season Club Coefficient, reflecting success in the UEFA Champions League or Europa League.

10
New cards

injuries and future health risk (Poulsen 2019)

Patients sustaining a major knee injury have a substantially increased risk of developing knee OA, highlighting the importance of knee injury prevention programmes and secondary prevention strategies to prevent or delay knee OA development

11
New cards

poulsen exp AIM

To estimate knee osteoarthritis risk following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), meniscus or combined ACL and meniscus injury

12
New cards

poulsen exp METHODS

The authors performed a systematic review and meta-analysis.

13
New cards

poulsen exp RESULTS

Fifty-three studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis.

Across the 53 studies data on ∼1 million participants were included; 185,219 participants with ACL injury; 83,267 participants with meniscal injury; and 725,362 participants with combined (i.e., ACL and meniscus) injury.

Those who had an isolated ACL injury had a 4.2 times higher risk of developing knee OA compared to un-injured individuals.

Those who has an isolated meniscus injury had a 6.3 times higher risk of developing knee OA compared to un-injured individuals.

Those who had a combined (i.e., ACL and meniscus) injury had a 6.4 times higher risk of developing knee OA compared to un-injured individuals
