Rigid Transformation
A transformation, such as translation, rotation, or reflection, that maps a preimage onto its image on the coordinate plane while preserving the size and shape of the figure.
Preimage
The original figure, such as △ABC, before any transformations have been applied.
Image
The resulting figure, such as △A′B′C′, after a sequence of transformations has been performed on a preimage.
Translation
A rigid motion that slides a figure along the coordinate plane, often described by a directed line segment or as moving a specific number of units in horizontal and vertical directions.
Directed Line Segment
A segment used to define the specific distance and direction of a translation, for example, the segment from A to A′.
Reflection
A rigid motion that flips a figure over a line of reflection, such as the x-axis, the y-axis, or a line like x=−2.
Rotation
A rigid motion that turns a figure around a fixed center of rotation by a specific angle and direction, such as 90∘ clockwise.
Sequence of Transformations
A series of two or more rigid motions performed in a specific order to map a preimage onto an image.
Coordinate Plane
A two-dimensional surface defined by an x-axis and a y-axis where ordered pairs are used to describe the locations of points and figures.
Center of Rotation
The fixed point on the coordinate plane around which a figure is turned during a rotation.
