Enzymes
Protein molecules that act as biological catalysts to speed up chemical reactions in living organisms.
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without undergoing permanent change itself.
Activation Energy
The minimum energy required to initiate a chemical reaction.
Active Site
The specific region of an enzyme where substrates bind and undergo a chemical reaction.
Lock and Key Model
A model that describes how enzymes and substrates fit together exactly like a key fits into a lock.
Induced Fit Model
A model that explains how the active site of an enzyme changes shape to better fit the substrate upon binding.
Denature
To alter the natural qualities of a substance; in enzymes, it refers to the loss of structure and function due to extreme conditions.
Optimal Temperature
The temperature range at which an enzyme is most active.
Optimal pH
The pH range at which an enzyme exhibits peak activity.
Substrate Concentration
The amount of substrate present that can be converted into products by an enzyme.
Catalase
An enzyme that breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Hydrogen Peroxide
A toxic waste product produced in cells that catalase helps to decompose.
Reliability
The degree to which repeated measurements under unchanged conditions show the same results.
Validity
The extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure.
Accuracy
The degree to which a measured value reflects the true value.
Bubbles (in enzyme activity context)
Visible signs of oxygen production from the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide by catalase.
Saturation Point
The point at which all enzyme active sites are occupied and no further increase in reaction rate can occur.
Control Tube
A test tube used to provide a baseline comparison when conducting experiments.
Enzyme Activity
The rate at which enzyme-catalyzed reactions occur.
