How is the place-value system central to understanding decimals?
The place-value system is central because decimals are infinite extensions of the base-10 system. Key connections include:
10-to-1 Relationship
Regrouping
Symmetry
What is the 10-to-1 relationship?
There is a consistent multiplicative relationship where each position is 10 times the value of the position to its right (or 1/10 of the position to its left).
What is the function of the decimal point?
Acts as the marker for the ones (units) place.
What are the three main concrete/semi-concrete models for decimals?
Area Models: Using base-ten materials, 10x10 grids, or circular rational number wheels.
Length Models: Using base-ten strips, connecting cubes (e.g., 10 red + 10 blue to make a “hundredths” length), or meter sticks.
Set Models: Using collections like 100-bead necklaces, lined-up cubes, or sets of 10, 100, or 1000 items.
How do decimal models differ from fraction models?
While both use area, set, and length models, decimal models must focus on tenths, hundredths, etc. Many standard fraction manipulatives do not effectively represent decimal fractions because decimals use the powers of 10.
What are three language considerations for teaching decimals?
Say Decimals Accurately: Say “five and two-tenths” instead of “five point two.”
Emphasize the “-th”: Exaggerate and model the “th” sound (e.g., tenth, hundredth) to distinguish decimals from whole numbers.
Use “And” Correctly: Use “and” to represent the decimal point.
Example: 32.16 is read as “thirty-two and sixteen hundredths.”
How do you compare and order decimals?
Students evaluate decimals to put them in order (least to greatest) using strategies such as:
Approximating with compatible fractions.
Converting fractions to decimals.
Comparing place values from left to right.
What are common challenges students face when comparing/ordering numbers?
“Longer is Larger”
“Shorter is Larger”
Internal Zeros
Less than Zero
Reciprocal Thinking
Equality
What are the general strategies for computing with decimals (Add/Sub/Mult/Div)?
Context and Visuals: Use real-world contexts and visual models to build understanding.
Estimation: Develop strategies for estimating sums, differences, products, and quotients to check reasonableness.
Algorithms: Develop and practice standard algorithms once conceptual understanding is established.
How are percents related to fractions and decimals?
Definition: Percent is simply another name for hundredths.
Connection: It has a standardized denominator of 100.
How can teachers help students understand the relationship between decimals and percents?
Models and Terminology
Conversion Practice (ex. shading 50 squares on a 10x10 grid = 50/100 = 50%).
