Knowing you are beat before you begin but beginning anyway. I agree. Atticus is taking on a case defending a black man that was accused of raping a white girl, which Atticus knows will be nearly impossible to convince people of.

She is strong and judgmental but she is addicted to morphine. She is trying to break her addiction before she dies. She is courageous because she would rather suffer then die with a burden. It was important to her and she succeeded.
