Electric Hand Drill

portable and is used for non- production type drilling operations

• Single speed or variable speed.

• Usually used for drill sizes from 1mm to 9mm

Drill Press

produces more accurate drilling results than a hand drill and is used for heavier drilling operations

• large diameter holes

• through thick materials

• can produce more pressure on the work piece than a hand drill

radial drill press

operates over a large area without the need to move the part

• arm can be moved up and down the column and swiveled about the column and drill head
  also can be moved along the radial arm

• heavy objects which cannot be moved easily

• many holes in the same piece

Gang Drill Press

consists of 2 to 6 upright drills connected together in an in-line arrangement to allow for a series of holes to be drilled at the same time

Drilling Process

cutting process that uses a drill bit to cut a round hole. The bit is pressed against the work-piece and rotated.

Cutting fluid

1. cool the drill bit
2. increase tool life
3. increase cutting speed

Allows moving the work piece in two dimensions
