Infrastructure
The essential physical structures and facilities developed by the Chinese government in inland China to attract businesses, boost employment, and prevent regional depopulation.
Hutongs
Old, traditional Chinese neighbourhoods constructed with a rectangular street pattern, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by the houses of about ten to twelve families.
Urban villages
Former rural villages that have become entirely enclosed by urban development, whose residents lost their agricultural land and now earn a living renting cheap accommodation to migrants.
Housing density
The concentration of housing and residential space in a specific area, described as being very high in cluttered, poorly built immigrant neighbourhoods.
Inland China development policy
The strategy used by the Chinese government to bring employment to inland regions through infrastructure improvement, low taxes, and less stringent environmental regulations.
