Valentina "Vale" Camacho (full name Valentina Mari Camacho)

A seventh-grade Puerto Rican fencer in Virginia who returns to the sport after a motorbike accident broke her left leg. She now uses a pink cane and deals with chronic pain.

Myrka Marerro

A Cuban fencer at Fencing Paradise with a long pink ponytail. She is nationally ranked and also on her school's robotics team. Vale has a crush on her.

Luis Manuel ("Manu")

Vale's older brother, who drives a Camry and goes to Jefferson High. He loves art (painting, writing, mosaics, zines) and talks about self-care.

Mami

Vale's mother, who is protective and made the cane inspirational in her own mind. She makes Vale's favorite dish, arroz guisado.

Papi

Vale's father, who taught her that champions don't get nervous. He insists on family salsa lessons.

Amanda

Vale's loyal friend, who has a soft Mexican accent and gives her a Switch Lite. She wants to make video games and has a crush on Mohamed.

Stephanie

Vale's ex-best friend and fellow fencer, who has red hair and blue eyes. She tore her ACL and ghosted Vale.

Coach Nate

The fencing coach at Fencing Paradise, who asks Vale to help lead the Mini Musketeers class.

Margaret and Cassie

Fencers who hang around with Stephanie. Margaret says Vale is only on the team because Coach feels sorry for her.

Dr. Claudia

Vale's Puerto Rican doctor, whom Vale trusts enough to ask whether she counts as disabled.

Mohamed

Amanda's crush, who adds her as a friend on PS5.

Myrka's white cat.
