Description and Tags

it does go with the carbon structure, because you look at where the C=O is on the carbon chain.

Aldose

A sugar with an aldehyde group.
Easy clue: C=O at the end.

The O stands for oxygen.

So in C=O:

  • C = carbon

  • O = oxygen

  • = means a double bond

So C=O = carbon double-bonded to oxygen.

Ketose

A sugar with a ketone group.
Easy clue: C=O in the middle/inside.

The O stands for oxygen.

So in C=O:

  • C = carbon

  • O = oxygen

  • = means a double bond

So C=O = carbon double-bonded to oxygen.
