What is longitudinal connectivity?
Connectivity between up and downstream
What is lateral connectivity?
Connectivity between floodplain and riparian areas?
What is vertical connectivity?
Connectivity between groundwater and atmosphere
What is temporal connectivity?
Connectivity based on seasonality and flows
What are some ways that freshwater streams have been modified?
Dikes, levees, tide gates
Define channelization
The artificial modification, straightening, deepening, widening, or lining of a natural stream or river
What is process based restoration? What are some examples?
Reintroducing the natural processes of a habitat, ex: reintroducing a native species, such as beavers that will modify the habitat to a more ‘natural’ state, or reintroducing loose woody debris
What are some benefits of direct habitat creation vs. process based restoration?
There are specific targets and locations, and the effects are immediate and predictable
What have been some major things that altered habitat in the trinity and klamath rivers?
Logging, Hydraulic/Dredger mining, dams
What is Liebig’s law of the minimum?
The resource in the shortest supply will be the primary constraint on biological production
What issues are there with a habitat limiting factors model?
It ignores life history diversity, and assumes survival is constant when the population is below capacity
What is implementation monitoring?
Ongoing tracking of whether a restoration projected is unfolding as planned.
What does a bioassessment do?
Measure characteristics of the biological community as indicators of river health
