FRONTAL LOBE
Involved in planning, decision-making, judgment, impulse control, and voluntary movement.
Motor cortex: controls voluntary body movements.
Prefrontal cortex: involved in planning, decision-making, judgment, impulse control, and considering consequences.
Example: Deciding whether to study or go out involves your prefrontal cortex.
ADOLESCENT BRAIN — PREFRONTAL CORTEX
continues developing during adolescence.
This relates to impulsivity and perspective-taking ability.
Impulsivity: acting before fully considering consequences.
Perspective-taking: understanding a situation from another person's point of view.
Connection: This is important because the prefrontal cortex is part of the frontal lobe and helps regulate decisions and behavior.
PARIETAL LOBE
Processes information related to touch and bodily sensations.
Somatosensory cortex: processes sensations such as touch, pressure, temperature, and pain.
Example: Feeling that something you're touching is hot involves the somatosensory cortex.
OCCIPITAL LOBE
Mainly responsible for vision.
Visual cortex: processes visual information.
Example: Looking at a stop sign and processing what you see involves your visual cortex.
TEMPORAL LOBE
Important for hearing and aspects of language.
Auditory cortex: processes sounds.
Example: Hearing your teacher talking involves your auditory cortex.
BROCA’S AREA
PRODUCING speech
Helps you produce language/speech.
BROCA’S APHASIA
a person generally knows what they want to communicate but has difficulty producing fluent speech.
WERNICKE’S AREA
UNDERSTANDING language
Helps with language comprehension.
WERNICKE’S APHASIA
speech may be fluent, but it may not make sense, and understanding language is impaired.
HEMISPHERIC LATERALIZATION
This means that some functions are more strongly associated with one hemisphere than the other.
LEFT HEMISPHERE
generally more specialized for language
RIGHT HEMISPHERE
generally more involved in things such as spatial and nonverbal processing
