Which side of the heart provides oxygenated blood to the body
Left
Which side of the heart is thickest and why ?
Left- has to pump blood a further distance so needs higher pressure
Function of the coronary arteries ?
Vessels that supply the heart muscle with fresh oxygen right blood
What are the two atrioventricular valves called and what are their functions ?
Tricuspid valve- stops back flow into the right atria
Bicuspid valve- stops back flow into the left atria
What are the names if the two semi-lunar valves and their functions ?
Aortic valve- stops back flow into left ventricle
Pulmonary valve- stops back flow into right ventricle
What is the function of the septum in the heart ?
Separate left and right chambers of the the heart, to stop deoxygenated and oxygenated blood from mixing.
What is the order of blood flow around the body ?
Right atrium → right ventricle →pulmonary artery →lungs →Pulmonary vein →left atrium →left ventricle →aorta →Body →vena cava
What is atria systole ?
When the atria’s contract, blood pressure in that chamber increases, pressure is applied to the atrioventricular valves forcing them open so blood flows in to the ventricles.
What is Ventricular systole ?
The ventricles contract so blood pressure increases forcing blood against the atrioventricular valves so they close stop back flow and this then forces the semilunar valves open to allow blood to flow through the aorta to the body and through the pulmonary artery to the lungs
What is diastole ?
When the muscles relax so the pressure in the chambers decrease. Blood then is able to flow in to the atria from the vena cava and pulmonary veins and this increases blood pressure again
How to calculate BPM using a blood pressure graph ?
Find two consecutive peaks in the diagram and measure the time between them, divide 60 by the time between the peaks and that is your bpm
