Communication Barriers
Factors or obstacles that prevent a message from being sent, received, or understood correctly, causing the message to get blocked or the meaning to get mixed up.
Physical Barriers
Environmental factors—such as loud noise, weak internet or phone signals, physical distance, or broken equipment—that make communication difficult.
Psychological Barriers
Internal emotional states—including fear, worry, stress, anger, or low confidence—that hinder an individual from listening or understanding effectively.
Perceptual Barriers
Obstacles arising when past experiences, preconceived opinions, biases, or selective listening alter how a message is interpreted by the receiver.
Active Listening
The communication practice of giving the speaker full attention without interrupting, demonstrated by looking and listening carefully, nodding or smiling, and focusing on the whole message.
Communication Style
The ways individuals express ideas, emotions, and information through verbal and nonverbal communication.
Direct Communication Style
A clear, straightforward, and open manner of communicating where the speaker states exactly what they mean explicitly and without ambiguity.
Indirect Communication Style
A polite and gentle manner of communicating that avoids confrontation by hinting or suggesting alternatives rather than stating opinions or rejections openly.
High-Context Culture
A cultural communication framework where meaning is derived heavily from the situation, relationships, feelings, and body language, requiring listeners to read between the lines.
Low-Context Culture
A cultural communication framework where meaning is conveyed primarily through the exact words spoken, emphasizing clear and explicit verbal statements.
Online Forum
A virtual platform where individuals communicate and interact by posting messages, comments, questions, and responses within structured discussions.
Asynchronous Communication
A mode of communication that allows participants to interact at different times rather than simultaneously, providing time to read and reflect before responding across schedules and time zones.
Persistent Discussions
A key characteristic of online forums where conversations are archived and remain accessible over time, enabling documentation, easier information retrieval, and preservation of community knowledge.
Digital Community
A group of individuals who interact through digital technologies and share common interests, goals, collective identities, values, or concerns.
Advocacy Communities
Digital communities organized around social issues and collective action, such as environmental movements, human rights organizations, gender equality campaigns, and public health groups.
