Basic Highway Speed Limit (Alberta)
The standard speed limit outside a city, town, or village on a primary highway, unless otherwise posted, which is 100 km/h.
Reversing a Passenger Vehicle
The maneuver of backing a passenger vehicle to the left, which requires looking over the right shoulder with occasional glances to the front.
Green Right-Turn Arrow with Red Light
A traffic control signal allowing a driver to proceed when safe, without stopping, in the direction of the arrow.
Demerit Point Suspension (Fully Licenced Driver)
The suspension of a driver's licence occurring when a fully licenced (non-learner, non-probationary) driver accumulates 15 demerit points in Alberta.
Passing a Large Truck
Overtaking a large truck on a two-way highway, during which the driver should leave extra room before returning to their lane.
Right Turn at a Red Light
A maneuver where a driver must signal, ensure no sign prohibits the turn, stop, look left and right, yield the right-of-way, and proceed when safe.

Dangerous Goods Route Sign
A traffic sign indicating a designated route for vehicles carrying dangerous goods.
Single Solid White Line
A road marking between driving lanes in an urban area indicating that lane changing is not permitted.
Parking Lane
That portion of a primary highway between the edge of the roadway to the right of the direction of traffic and the nearest solid white line, not being the centre line, marked on the roadway.
Shoulder Checking
Glancing towards the blind spot in the direction the driver intends to move.

Slippery When Wet Sign
A warning sign indicating that the road surface ahead is slippery when wet.

Red 'X' Traffic-Lane Control Light
A traffic-lane control light signal indicating that travel is not permitted in that lane.
Parental Consent Withdrawal
The legal right of a parent to withdraw previously given consent for an operator's licence for someone under 18 years of age who is not married or self-supporting.
Yield Sign
A traffic sign requiring a driver to yield the right-of-way to traffic not facing the sign and all pedestrians in the intersection.
Over-Driving Headlights
Travelling at a speed at night that would not permit the driver to see an object in time to stop within the distance illuminated by the headlights.
GDL Seat Belt Demerit Penalty
A 2-demerit penalty received under the Graduated Driver Licensing program for having more passengers than there are seat belts.
2-Second Rule
A method used to judge a safe following distance when driving, which is accurate at any speed.

Winding Road Ahead Sign
A warning sign indicating a winding road ahead.
Flashing Red Traffic Light
A signal requiring a driver to come to a complete stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so.

Yield Sign Ahead Warning Sign
A warning sign alerting drivers that they are approaching a Yield sign.
Driver Restraint Responsibility Age
The legal responsibility of a driver in Alberta to ensure that all passengers under 16 years of age are properly restrained.
Parallel Parking Distance
The requirement that when parallel parking, a vehicle's wheels closest to the curb must be within a maximum distance of 30 centimetres from the curb.
Medical Condition Reporting Duty
The legal obligation of the driver to report any medical condition, change in health, or physical disability that may affect their ability to drive.

Two-Way Traffic Sign
A warning sign indicating two-way traffic ahead.

Bump Warning Sign
A warning sign indicating a bump or sharp rise in the road surface ahead.
Probationary Class 5 Duration
The minimum period of 2 years that a person must serve as a probationary Class 5 driver under the Graduated Driver Licensing program.
Painted Large 'X' Marking
A pavement marking indicating a railway crossing ahead.
Collision Reporting Threshold
The legal threshold requiring a driver to report a collision to police when persons are injured or killed, or when combined damage exceeds $1000.
Stopping Distance Behind Traffic
The practice of leaving sufficient space when stopping behind another vehicle in traffic to move into another lane without reversing.
Tailgating Response
The action of slowing down gradually to encourage a tailgating vehicle to pass.
Recovery from a Skid
Steering the vehicle in the direction the driver wants the front of the vehicle to go.
Slow-Moving Vehicle Threshold
A designation for any vehicle that normally travels at speeds less than 40 km/h, requiring a slow-moving vehicle sign on the rear.
Left Turn on Steady Green Light
A turning maneuver where the driver must not cross the path of an approaching vehicle unless it is safe.
Weave Zone
A place on a highway where entrance and exit lanes are close together, requiring vehicles slowing to exit to drive between vehicles accelerating to enter.
Road Test Refusal Condition
The refusal of a driving road test by an examiner if the vehicle is not mechanically safe.
Speed Limit During Passing
The rule stating that a driver is never permitted to exceed the posted speed limit when passing another vehicle.

Playground Zone Sign
A traffic sign designating a playground zone.
Construction Zone Speed Limit
The speed limit posted in a construction zone that must be obeyed at all times.
Threshold Braking
A braking technique for vehicles without ABS where braking force is applied to the point just before the wheels lock, easing off slightly if they lock.
Emergency Vehicle Yielding Rule
The requirement on a two-way road to drive as close as possible to the right curb or edge and stop when approached by an active emergency vehicle.

Do Not Enter Sign
A regulatory sign indicating that entry is prohibited for vehicles.
Traffic Circle Right-of-Way
The rule requiring drivers entering a traffic circle to yield the right-of-way to vehicles already in the circle.
Deceleration Lane
A lane where vehicles reduce speed when exiting a highway.
Reversing Technique
Placing the left hand at the top of the steering wheel and looking over the right shoulder through the rear window when driving in reverse in a straight line.
Acceleration Lane
A lane in a merge area used by vehicles entering a highway to accelerate and match traffic speed.

Added Lane (Free Flow) Sign
A sign indicating an added lane ahead allowing entering traffic to merge smoothly without stopping.
Class 7 GDL Curfew
The restriction under the Graduated Driver Licensing program prohibiting Class 7 learners from driving between midnight and 5:00 A.M.
Flashing Yellow Traffic Light
A traffic signal instructing drivers to proceed with caution.
School Zone Hours
Standard Alberta school zone hours on school days: 8:00 A.M. to 9:30 A.M., 11:30 A.M. to 1:30 P.M., and 3:00 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.
Uphill Parking with a Curb
Parking uphill on a two-way road with a curb, requiring the front wheels to be turned to the left.
Flashing Red Lights on a School Bus
A signal requiring drivers approaching from the rear to stop behind the bus and wait until the alternating red lights stop flashing.
Urban Visual Scanning Distance
The recommended practice of scanning 12 to 15 seconds ahead when driving in urban areas.

'T' Intersection Sign
A warning sign indicating a T-intersection ahead.
Playground Zone Hours
The hours during which playground zones are in effect, from 8:30 A.M. to 1 hour after sunset.

Merging Traffic Sign
A warning sign indicating merging traffic ahead.
Parking Near a Stop Sign
The minimum legal distance of 5 metres required when parking near a Stop sign.
Accessible Parking Placard
A proper identifying placard or licence plate required to legally park in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities.
Headlight Dimming Distance (Following)
The minimum distance of 100 metres at which high beam headlights must be dimmed when approaching another vehicle from behind at night.
Dual Turn Lanes
Turning lanes permitting simultaneous turns, allowed only when indicated by pavement markings or traffic control signs.

Left Turn or Straight Sign
A lane control sign indicating that vehicles in the lane may turn left or go straight.
Class 7 Demerit Suspension Threshold
The accumulation of 8 demerits resulting in licence suspension for a Class 7 GDL learner.
Speed Limit Sign
A traffic sign indicating the maximum speed permitted when conditions are favourable.
Uncontrolled Intersection
An intersection that has no traffic control signal lights or traffic signs.

Railway Crossing Sign
A warning sign indicating a railway crossing ahead.
Merging Procedure
Watching for a gap in traffic, adjusting to highway speed in the acceleration lane, and blending in smoothly.
Low Visibility Driving Headlight Setting
The requirement to use low beam headlights in fog, smoke, or snow.

Reserved Lane Sign
A regulatory sign indicating that a lane is reserved for use by specified vehicles, such as buses.

Traffic Control Signal Advance Warning Sign
A warning sign indicating a traffic control signal ahead.
Head Restraint Adjustment
Positioning the head restraint so that its centre is level with the top of the ears.
Flashing Amber Lights on a School Bus
A warning that the bus is preparing to stop and its alternating flashing red lights will activate shortly.
Nighttime
The period defined in the Basic Licence Driver's Handbook as beginning 1 hour after sunset and ending 1 hour before the following sunrise.

Straight Through or Right Turn Sign
A lane control sign permitting vehicles to go straight through or turn right.
Exiting a Parking Lot
The requirement for a vehicle exiting a parking lot onto a roadway to come to a complete stop.
Railway Crossing Stop Distance
Stopping at least 5 metres from the nearest rail when a railway crossing signal is activated.
Driving Technique for Curves
Reducing speed before the curve, staying in the lane, and gently accelerating after entering the curve.

Slow Moving Vehicle Sign
A triangular emblem placed on the rear of vehicles travelling at speeds less than 40 km/h.
Log-Haul Truck Danger Zone
The hazard created during a turn by the overhang of logs at the tail end of the truck, which could block all lanes.

Pedestrian Crossing Ahead Sign
A warning sign indicating a pedestrian crossing ahead.

School Crosswalk Ahead Sign
A warning sign indicating a school crosswalk ahead.
Angle Parking Distance
The requirement that when completing an angle park, the vehicle's front wheel must be within a maximum distance of 50 cm from the nearest curb.
Pedestrian Pointing Signal
A signal where a standing pedestrian extends their arm pointing to the opposite curb, requiring drivers to stop and yield.

Hazard Marker Sign
A warning marker indicating a hazard or obstruction adjacent to the roadway.

Divided Highway Begins Sign
A warning sign indicating the start of a divided highway.
Steady Yellow Traffic Light
A signal indicating drivers must stop before the intersection unless the stop cannot be made in safety.
Solid and Broken Yellow Line Markings
Centre line markings indicating that passing is permitted if the broken line is on the driver's side.
School Zone Maximum Speed
The maximum speed permitted in a school zone during active hours, which is 30 km/h unless otherwise posted.

Hospital Services Sign
A service sign indicating nearby hospital facilities.
Fire Hydrant Parking Distance
The minimum legal distance of 5 metres required when parking near a fire hydrant.

Flag Person Ahead Sign
A construction warning sign indicating a flag person ahead directing traffic.
Being Passed
The duty of a driver being passed on a two-way road to stay in the lane and move to the right portion of the lane.
