Why are our food systems today not sustainable?

Recommendations in the book (Not the end of the world) for making more sustainable food systems

  • improving crop yields - through technological advancement and adoption

  • eat less meat

  • waste less food

  • substitute dairy with plant-based alternatives

→ different perspectives on the points being made in the book, different solutions:

  1. small-scale and agroecological farmers

  2. resource-constrained people

3
New cards

Techno-centric solutions in a messy reality

→ technology is available but the adoption of these solutions are poor, why?

  • markets, rules and systems are not supportive of the solutions

  • poverty and precarity

  • relying on one pathway creates other problems (corporate control, public health issues)

4
New cards

People centered solutions

What if we design solutions, assuming that behaviours we see today, don’t change (or very slow)?

Food systems are not purely technological or ecological

& the importance of people in finding solutions

"People are central to these sustainability challenges →\rightarrow so where are they in thinking about solutions?"

Tweaking recommendations in the book

  1. Improving crop yields – through a diversity of solutions:

  1. Eat less (red) meat, with a more diverse, balanced and culturally appropriate food:

  1. Incorporate plant-based alternatives as much as possible & desired:
