cell cycle
sequence of events in which a body cell duplicates its contents and divides in two
Interphase
cell performs normal functions, prepares for division, and grows and creates copies of organelles and replicates DNA
Mitosis
process through which a cell divides genetic information into two identical copies within independent nuclei
Meiosis
produces sex cells and involves two cell divisions instead of one, produces four genetically unique cells
Mitotic phase
consists of nuclear division and cytoplasmic division to form two identical cells
Interphase
chromosomes double
Prophase
prepare: nuclear membrane dissolves
Metaphase
middle: chromosomes line up on the equator
Anaphase
apart: chromosomes are pulled apart
Telophase
two nuclei form
Cytokinesis
cytoplasm and organelles divide
G1 phase
The cell grows bigger, copies organelles, and makes proteins (8-10 hours)
S phase
DNA replicated (8 hours)
G2
cell growth continues; proteins and enzymes are synthesized; centrosome replication is completed (4-6 hours)
