Scientific Method
A procedure made to discover facts, minimize bias, and obtain reliable results.
Observation
Using the 5 senses (sight, touch, etc.) to study something.
Qualitative Observation
Uses words to describe characteristics (e.g., texture, color, smell, sound, etc).
Quantitative Observation
Uses values and numbers to describe characteristics.
Inference
An explanation based on past experience or prior knowledge.
Formulating Questions
Asking specific questions based on observations.
Hypothesis
A possible and reasonable explanation for a problem that can be tested.
Experimental Data
Notes, graphs, and tabulations recorded during an experiment.
Analyzing Data
The interpretation and analysis of collected data.
Conclusion
A decision drawn from the results and data of an experiment.
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated or changed in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
The variable that depends on the independent variable and is measured.
Constant Variable
A variable that remains unchanged throughout the experiment.
D.R.Y M.I.X
A method to graph independent (manipulated) and dependent (responding) variables.
Experimental Setup
The specific arrangement and conditions under which an experiment is conducted.
Controlled Setup
The basis for comparison that does not receive the treatment in an experiment.
Bob’s Observation Example
Bob noticed he got a low score on his science test, using his sight.
Bob’s Inference Example
Bob infers he should study harder based on his low score.
Bob’s Question Example
Bob asks, 'Will studying harder actually improve my test scores?'
Bob’s Hypothesis Example
If I spend at least two hours a day studying, I will achieve better grades.
Bob’s Experimenting Example
Bob compares himself to a classmate who studies only 30 minutes a day.
Bob’s Data Collection Example
Bob uses graphs and charts to gather information about test scores.
Bob's Conclusion Example
Bob concludes he needs to study harder and use new methods to improve grades.
Variables
Factors and conditions that affect the outcome of an experiment.
Types of Variables
Independent, dependent, and constant variables in an experiment.
Manipulated Variable
Another term for independent variable, changed and controlled by the researcher.
Responding Variable
Another term for dependent variable, measured to see effects of changes.
Fair Experiment
An experiment that controls variables to ensure reliable results.
Framework of Experiment
The structure and organization of the scientific experiment.
Experimental Group
The group in an experiment that receives the treatment or manipulation of the independent variable.
Control Group
A group in an experiment that does not receive the treatment, serving for comparison.
Research Question
A question that guides the focus of an experiment.
Scientific Conclusion
The outcome of research that draws upon evidence from data analysis.
