Couplets
A pair of lines of verse,
Scansion
a poem's meter and rhythm by marking stressed and unstressed syllables.
Quatrain
A stanza or poem consisting of four lines,
Tercet
A poetic stanza or unit of three lines.
Enjambment
The continuation of a sentence or clause across a line break
Foot / Iamb
A foot is a basic unit of poetic meter; an iamb is a specific foot
Syntax
The arrangement and ordering of words

Figurative Language
Phrasing or expressions used to convey meanings beyond the literal interpretation.
Hyperbole
extreme exaggeration used for emphasis or effect.
Iambic Pentameter
A line of poetry composed of ten syllables with alternating unstressed and stressed beats.
Tone/Mood
Tone is the author's attitude toward the subject; mood is the atmospheric feeling or emotional effect created for the reader.
Metaphor
A direct comparison between two unlike things without using 'like' or 'as'.
Meter
The measured pattern of beats in a line of poetry.
Personification
A figure of speech giving human attributes or traits to non-human things, animals, or ideas.
Poetry
A form of literature that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to evoke meanings or emotions.
Repetition
The purposeful reuse of words, phrases, lines, or sounds to emphasize a theme or idea.
Verse
A single line of poetry
Rhyme
The repetition of similar or identical sounds in two or more words,
Rhyme Scheme
The ordered pattern of rhymes (e.g., ABAB).
Simile
comparing using like or as
Stanza
A grouped set of lines within a poem, separated from other groups by a space.
Theme
The central idea, lesson, or underlying message expressed throughout a literary work.
Bar
A measure or structural unit in rhythm and meter

Alliteration
The repetition of consonent sounds
Consonance
The repetition of internal or ending consonant sounds in nearby words.
Assonance

Multisyllabic Rhyme
A rhyme containing two or more rhyming syllables.
Internal Rhyme
A rhyme that occurs within a single line of verse
End Rhyme
A rhyme that occurs in the final syllables or words at the end of poetic lines.
Sibilance
A literary device involving the repeated use of soft consonant sounds like 's', 'sh', or 'z' to create a hissing sound.
