Vocabulary practice flashcards covering summation notation, index variables, standard series formulas, big aggregate operators, and systems of power sums.
Summation
The discrete analogue of an integral, written as ∑i=abxi, representing the sum of a sequence of terms xa+xa+1+⋯+xb.
Index of Summation
The loop variable (commonly i, j, or k) in a summation that iterates through all integer values from the lower bound to the upper bound, inclusive.
Empty Sum
A summation where the upper bound is strictly less than the lower bound (b<a); it evaluates to 0, the additive identity element.
Scope of a Summation
The range of an expression governed by the summation operator, which extends to the first addition or subtraction operator not enclosed in parentheses or contained within a larger term.
Einstein Summation Convention
A mathematical convention often used by theoretical physicists in which the explicit summation symbol (∑) is omitted entirely for certain types of sums over an understood range.
Linearity of Summation
The property that allows constant factors to be factored out of a sum (∑axi=a∑xi) and sums of terms to be split into separate sums (∑(xi+yi)=∑xi+∑yi).
Double Sum
A nested summation where the expression inside one summation is itself a summation, equivalent to two nested loops summing over all pairs of indices.
Arithmetic Series
A sequence of terms where the difference between adjacent terms is constant; the standard sum of the first n positive integers evaluates to ∑i=1ni=2n(n+1).
Geometric Series
A series in which the ratio between consecutive terms is constant; its finite sum is ∑i=0nxi=1−x1−xn+1 and its infinite sum is ∑i=0∞xi=1−x1 for ∣x∣<1.
Harmonic Number (Hn)
The sum of the reciprocals of the first n positive integers, denoted Hn=∑i=1ni1.
Guess-and-Verify Method
A technique for solving summations by calculating values for the first several bounds to identify a sequence pattern, followed by proving the closed-form formula using mathematical induction.
Product Notation (∏)
An aggregate mathematical operator denoted by a capital Greek letter pi (∏) used to represent repeated multiplication over a sequence of terms.
Empty Product
A product over an empty index set (or where the upper bound is less than the lower bound); it evaluates to 1, the multiplicative identity element.
Identity Elements for Big Operators
The values returned when aggregate operators act over an empty index set: 0 for sum, 1 for product, True for Big AND, False for Big OR, and ∅ for Big Union.

System of Symmetric Power Sums
A mathematical system specifying the values of power sums for variables a, b, and c (a+b+c=4, a2+b2+c2=10, and a3+b3+c3=22) to evaluate the fourth-degree power sum a4+b4+c4.
