Why still having faith in god

We still need to have faith because god calls us to a life with him. Having faith also helps understand who he is throuh revelation

2
New cards

What is meant by "simple, unique, unrestricted” God

God is simple because he has no parts. God is simple because he is unrestricted. God is unrestricted because he has no parts that have restrictions

3
New cards

A-piori evidence

Any contradiction is impossible and therefore false. We can not disprove god using this method because god is unrestricted and cannot be contradicted

4
New cards

A-posteriori evidence

A claim is false if a search of all reality reveals that it does not exist. We cannot disprove god using his method because we would have to search our entire universe and the whole reality beyond it. If god isn't perceivable b our senses or our scientific instruments, he might escape our search

5
New cards

A-priori and a-posteriori evidence cannot be used to..

Disprove god

6
New cards

The foundation of lonergan's argument about god

If all reality is completely intelligible (understandable), then god exists. But all reality is completely intelligible. Therefore God exists.

Dawkins view on proofs of god

Dawkins view in The God Delusion summarized as:
"A designer must always be more complex than what it designs"-meaning that "a designer must be more improbable than what it designs"
"Whatever is more complex is more improbable"-meaning that "the more complex a reality is, the more parts there are to order, and order is less probable than disorder"

However, this materialistic view of reality cannot be applied to god because god is unrestricted and cannot have complexity

8
New cards

Gods simplicity

God is simple because he is unrestricted because he does not have any parts because parts have restrictions

9
New cards

St. Thomas's proof of god

1.there has to be one uncaused reality(a reality existing through itself), or else there would be nothing

  1. existence through itself must be unrestricted otherwise the whole reality would be that one restricted way of acting

  2. an unrestricted reality must be one and only one

10
New cards

Bertrand Russell's opposition to st.thomas'

1."so what caused god?"-god must have a cause too
2."if there can be anything without a cause, it may just as well be the world as god"

However, Aquinas' argument for a first cause doesn't mean hat everything has a cause, rather, he said hat everything un the universe cannot be caused

Also, saying "what caused god?" Is the same as asking "what caused the uncaused reality?" Which is contradictory

11
New cards

Gods existence from Bernard lonergan

1.all reality must have one uncaused reality that exists through itself
2.any uncaused reality must be final and sufficient to all coherent questions making it completely intelligible
3.the uncaused reality must be unrestricted in intelligibility
4.a reality that is unrestricted in intelligibility must be unique
5.this one uncaused reality is the ultimate cause of everything else in reality

Quote that does not say god as one

"God is loving"

15
New cards

Bertrand Russell

"What caused god?"

16
New cards

God is simple because

He has no parts

17
New cards

Should we still have faith?

Yes

18

Dawkins applied a

Materialistic view

19
New cards

St.thomas' proof was love

False

20
New cards

Lonergans argument question

"Why is reality this way instead of another?"

21
New cards

If god may exist and it is safe to bet on him

It is safe to bet that god exists
