Apoenzyme
The protein part of an enzyme by itself. It is missing its helper.
Cofactor
A nonprotein helper that helps an enzyme work. Often a metal ion.
Coenzyme
An organic helper that helps an enzyme work.
Holoenzyme
The complete working enzyme with its helper attached.
Easy way to remember apoenzyme vs. holoenzyme
Apoenzyme = missing helper. Holoenzyme = complete and working. ✅
Do all enzymes need a coenzyme?
No.
Is every enzyme an apoenzyme?
No. It is only called an apoenzyme when its required helper is missing.
