Deductive Argumentation
A form of reasoning where the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises.
Conditional Proposition
A logical statement in the form 'If P, then Q,' symbolized as P → Q.
Sufficient Condition
A condition that guarantees the truth of another condition; if the antecedent is true, the consequent must also be true.
Necessary Condition
A condition that must be true for another condition to be true; if the consequent is false, then the antecedent must be false.
Metabolism
The set of life-sustaining chemical reactions in organisms, necessary for something to be classified as living.
Negation
Symbolized with '~', it indicates the opposite truth value of a statement.
Modus Ponens (MP)
A rule of inference that states if 'P → Q' is true and P is true, then Q must also be true.
Modus Tollens (MT)
A rule of inference stating that if 'P → Q' is true and Q is false, then P must also be false.
Categorical Syllogism
A form of deductive reasoning that consists of two premises and a conclusion, where the premises contain a term common to both.
Middle Term
The term that appears in both premises of a syllogism but is not in the conclusion.
Figure of the Categorical Syllogism
The arrangement of the middle term in the premises of a categorical syllogism.
Categorical Mood
The quality of categorical syllogisms based on the propositions' structure (A, E, I, O).
A Claim
A universal affirmative statement that asserts all members of a category belong to another category.
E Claim
A universal negative statement declaring that no members of one category belong to another.
I Claim
A particular affirmative statement indicating that some members of a category belong to another category.
O Claim
A particular negative statement stating that some members of one category do not belong to another.
Hypothetical Syllogism (HS)
A rule of inference that allows the conclusion of a syllogism based on two conditional premises.
Disjunctive Syllogism (DS)
A form of reasoning that concludes one term from the negation of another, based on disjunction.
Sound Argument
An argument that is both valid (correct logical form) and has true premises.
Practical Conclusion
The result derived from applying deductive reasoning to real-world situations.
Categorial Claim
A statement that refers to the members of a category with implications about their characteristics.
