Phenomenon
A fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question.
Hypothesis
A testable statement that describes how something in the natural world works.
Experiment
A process to test a hypothesis by collecting data and analyzing results.
Scientific Law
A description of a pattern in nature that is true in all circumstances that have been studied; universal and concise.
Principles
Scientific ideas and explanations that are true in many, but not all situations in the universe.
Theory
An explanation for patterns in nature that is supported by much scientific evidence and verified multiple times by multiple researchers; withstands rigorous testing and verification.
Independent Variable
The element or factor being changed in an experiment, usually only one per experiment.
Dependent Variable
The element or factor affected by the change in an experiment.
Constants/Controlled Variable/Group
Every element or factor that remains constant and unchanging in an experiment.
